<\/p>\nAt Mischief Monkey News we take great care to be neutral and understanding in all Simian related matters, but we have heard too many complaints to stay silent any longer. MMN cares deeply about all simians – chimpanzees, gibbons, chimpanzees, crab-eating macaques, chimpanzees … and even our baboon brethren. But we have to address the loud and constant complaints that we hear regarding baboons.<\/p>\n
When we visited the streets of Flemington the message was absolutely clear. M of Flemington said “They just move in! It starts when Santa Clause dumps one in the middle of the living room at Christmas – it’s bad enough that Santa is whispering nasty things about monkeys to the shelf-elves, then he drops off the most annoying, smelly and boring monkey in existence. “Don’t drink too much … you really would feel better with a day sober … do you need a hug? … how’s the hangover? … have you tried yoga?” – I mean the nerve of this guy!!! And his breath smells of baboon poo.”<\/p>\n

Although shy and retiring, M was willing when pressed to provide more insights: “And what’s so big about getting a P.d.h? I mean – I talk good enough and can almost read. And why study those annoying birds? All they do is play, twitter and eat healthy food! I mean … BORING!!!”.<\/p>\n
One consistent message is that once one baboon is present, more seem to arrive. Morris from Flemington confirmed this: “We were all so excited when Norbert arrived to visit his uncle Bob. He’s such a cute, cheerful young monkey and everyone loves him! Well, except Monkey of course”. And the intention to stay was made clear by Greybeard of Flemington: “We are really hoping that Norbert makes this his home – he’s most welcome and seems to want to stay!”.<\/p>\n
We were fortunate to get a final word from M: “So what’s the big deal with showering, yoga and studying? And not drinking beer or whiskey. BORING!!! Still, leaves more for real monkeys like me I guess.”<\/p>\n
We at MMN feel that the evidence is clear – clean-living, healthy, polite, well intentioned and well educated baboons are arriving en masse, often forming groups of up to 2 baboons. Their presence constrains the free-living habits of other monkeys such as M of Flemington.<\/p>\n
Of course baboons have a right to live somewhere, but perhaps they should set up home in the Exclusive Bird Houses that lie empty?<\/p>\n
